Untitled (Landscape colour study)

Thread and mixed materials, 100x100cm

In this piece, thick paint is replaced by ridges of untethered fabric and drawn lines are replaced by stitches and stretches of thread. For me it echoes the feeling of looking across the landscape, seeing hills in the distance- some vivid and others smudged by thick mist. A small gap in the surface references the layering of the landscape,  looking across the glen or peering through a crevice to see further into the munro.

Whilst walking I note the colours I see, gathering a particular spectrum for my paintings, affected by light, weather and time. The colours here are taken from a summertime walk into the hills, when I aim to record the unexpected or unusual colours of the munro to show that the hills aren't just green, and granite isn't just grey.

This piece will look different in every hanging, as the colouring of the wall behind becomes part of the artwork. In this way, it is a unique work to have in the home or gallery.
