Samphire Hoe
Land reclaimed from the Sea.
Created from the 5million cubic metres of spoil extracted from below the sea to create the Channel Tunnel.
Another example of industrial wasteland becoming a site for biodiversity.
There were some loose lumps of chalk, lying amongst the grasses, that I've gathered. Looking forward to seeing what type of painting pigment this becomes.
Extraction, 11 April – 26 July 2026, Jupiter Artland.
Can't quite believe my work will be shown alongside these incredible artists, who have been an inspiration for years.
Thanks so much to Eloise Bennett and the team at @jupiter.artland for inviting me.
'Extraction is an exhibition exploring the cultural, psychological and environmental legacies
of energy systems. It brings together works by Carol Rhodes, john gerrard, Marguerite
Humeau, Siobhan McLaughlin and John Latham. Their practices are presented in dialogue
with the unique landscape of Jupiter Artland, where the traces of three distinct energy eras
exist simultaneously: the nineteenth-century shale oil industry, the twentieth-century North
Sea petroleum economy and contemporary renewable infrastructure.'
Delighted to have been invited to exhibit in Nature Turns at the @royal_scottish_academy.
The exhibition marks the beginning of the RSA's 200th year celebration. Find my work alongside @charlenescottart @victoriacrowe__ @laura.drever and other artists connected to the RSA through residencies and awards.
The show includes this new painting, Renewal of the Five Sisters. Made using shale from the bings in West Calder, thinking about how landscapes have been shaped over time and new beginnings on post-industrial sites.
The exhibition runs in the RSA Lower Galleries 6th December - 18th January
Work in progress
Remnants of Barbara Hepworth's studio curtains, discarded linen, Raine studio off-cuts, Joe's shirt, Naum Gabo Tate exhibition curtains, grandmother's relic material, and windsurf ripstop from Anthony Frost, amongst other gifted fabrics, sewn and stretched.
Thinking about layers of histories, communities, and artistic lineages in this new piece.

Date of Exhaustion,
Earth pigment, oil and acrylic on sewn remnant materials, 80 x 100 cm.
Rather than being shaped “by the direction of the wind” as contemporary sources claimed, maps and plans of the shale oils works from the 1850s-1960s in West Calder show that these monumental heaps of waste rock were not an accident of production. The rivers and lochs that were filled in, or the homes crushed, were meticulously planned. The date of exhaustion of the land was calculated.
This idea of intent, extraction and devastation, and the planning of time was interesting to me. The ‘date of exhaustion’ felt a particularly uneasy concept as chronic pain flare ups meant this body of work was physically difficult to make. Inserting a study of the new industrial works currently at the site, painted with grey and black stone gathered there, disrupts the seemingly natural landscape of the Five Sisters.
As @samuel_odonnell wrote in his exhibition text, “Today, covered as they are in grasses and scrub, they silently pass as potentially natural hills, a literal uncanny valley. Yet their obscurity veils a complicated history, one full of extraction, exploitation and social change.”
For the full text, take a look at @glasgow_art_map
The Five Sisters continues today at @aplacegallery until 2pm!
Pioneer Species
Earth pigment from Five Sisters Shale and acrylic on sewn remnant materials
42 x 31 cm
Here's a new work, which grew from reading about primary succession on derelict sites and shale bings in West Calder, and seeing these small leaves pushing out of the red and pink scree covering the manufactured hillside of the Five Sisters bing.
Ecologist Barbara Harvie recorded more plant species on the bings than can be found on Ben Nevis- 350 species including eight rare species of moss and lichen. I've found this fascinating to read about, to understand that the bings have much to tell us, as @calflyn wrote, about "nature’s resilience and capacity to recover after what would seem like a death blow." The paradox between pollution and biodiversity, hope growing out of black and red discarded earth.
The Five Sisters, continues at @aplacegallery in Glasgow this week. Head to the @glasgow_art_map Journal to read Sam's text about the exhibition.
From the Five Sisters
A painting made only using the pigment of two stones from West Calder: One, the red shale, a remnant of a post-industrial landscape, a visual memory of heaped pink hills glimpsed while travel across the central belt, a waste-rock discarded during paraffin mining 1851 - 1963. The other a dark grey earth, collected from the same Five Sisters, but at the base of the bing, part of a current industrial process..
This work and others will form my exhibition The Five Sisters, opening at @aplacegallery on 7th November. Save the date!
Waste rock and primary succession
Looking at shale bings, the legacy of paraffin mining in central belt Scotland, and ecological succession for my solo show at @aplacegallery in November.
So much to say about these post-industrial landscapes, that many artists have been intrigued by over the years. Looking forward to this research developing over the next month.

Absolutely delighted to have been asked by @tate and @tobyamiesmakesfilms to be part of this project about Alan Davie.
Was a fun project to work on, speaking about Davie's work in relation to music and life, a few years after curating his retrospective at @dovecotstudios.
Great to see a potentially 'conservative' group embracing freeform jazz and exploring ideas crucial to this modern artist's practice.
Find the full video on Tate's youtube, link in bio.
A QR code to the film will be displayed next to Black Mirror, 1952, currently on show at Tate Britain.

Happy Earth Day
Continually amazed at the colours we can naturally get from the earth. And what these colours can tell us about the land: the stories of community, mythology and impact of industry on the earth.
I hope by using these colours, rooted in the land, the work asks 'what do we see when we slow down to look and how can this help us care for our land and each other?'
Thanks to everyone I've walked with and gathered stones with over the years, including @peteward.artist @lywardian @jonathanmichaelray and @gracebrowneartist

Delighted to be included in this exhibition at Grizedale Forest Galleries, 4th April – 8th June 2025.
The exhibition asks How are artists responding to local and global climate and nature crises? What does their work bring into focus, which absences does it highlight, whose voices are brought in?
My work will be shown alongside other PLACE Collective members, a community of artists and researchers engaged with issues of nature, environment and rural landscapes.
Thank you to @somewhere_now.here and the steering group for developing this show.

Relic (Imprint of Our Mount Joy), Earth pigment and pencil monotype on remnant textile, 30 x 23cm.
Our Mount Joy, Earth pigment, oil paint and pencil on sewn remnant textiles, 170x90cm.
Excerpt from the text, 'Belongings' by Martin Holeman @kirsgillow, available to read through the link in bio:
"...Our Mount Joy. Suspended nearby, this time from the gallery ceiling, its expanse confronts the visitor. It dares a response and gradual absorption in its presence. Light draws out and even exaggerates its geography, strafing the surface unpredictably, throwing into relief granular areas of earthy colouring. And the length of it sways gently, unhurriedly, in the backdraft of visitors who enter, pass, circumvent..."
The size of this piece is the height of my body by the width the span my outstretched arms can achieve before feeling pain. Felt like a huge piece to complete, really happy with the presence it had in @_hweg_ .

Relic (Saint Edmond Arrowsmith)
Woven remnant textiles, earth pigment, and cloth contact relic of Saint Edmond Arrowsmith, 30 × 23 cm. Available.
Edmond Arrowsmith was a 16th c. Catholic martyr who’s hand became a relic valued for its healing power.
In these new small works, relics of saints connected to care and healing are held in landscapes, or within weaves of mended textiles.
Weaving is used as a method of repair and connection of thoughts and people. Here, the woven remnants of old paintings and discarded textiles carry the saint’s relic as if in a hand or basket.
My exhibition, Pilgrimages, continues at @_hweg_ for just another week. If you're in the SW and would like to see the show please get in touch with Joe @_hweg_ to visit, or for a copy of the online catalogue.
Trencrom Hill (St Michael's Way)
Earth pigment, oil paint, and pencil on sewn remnant material, 35 x 26.5cm
Trencrom Hill is around the halfway point on the St Michael's Pilgrims Way, and is a good space to rest. Rocks are layered upon rocks here- an ancient holy well and Neolithic tor enclosure that was later re-used as an Iron age hillfort, then in the 1800s was the site of the Wheal Cherry mine.
Histories, mythology and land use all piled up.
Pleased this wee painting is off to it's new home soon ✨
Pilgrimages continues at @_hweg_ until 11th January. Get in touch with Joe at @_hweg_ for enquires and appointments :)
Pilgrimages
22 November 2024 ~ 11 January 2025
@_hweg_ Penzance
Open Friday, Saturday, and by appointment.
This exhibition of new work builds upon the first painting I made solely using earth pigments for colour, Towards Lizard Point. Created when I had my first @visual.arts.scotland residency in Cornwall at @porthmeorstudios Anchor Studios in 2022.
I walked with dozens of people during that residency, exploring the landscape and the stories of place there. Since then I have made several pilgrimages to SW Cornwall, across the St Michael’s Pilgrims Way, and have learnt of other pilgrimage journeys in my family history.
Walking has always been a constant in my practice, to meet people, to gather earth pigment and learn about the land, and I’m grateful for @_hweg_ and this exhibition to explore those ideas further.
If you are interested in any of the works from the show, please get in touch with Joe at Hweg.
Delighted to present my solo exhibition 'Pilgrimages' at Hweg gallery in Penzance.
Working with remnant textiles and gathered earth pigments, these works explore experiences of the landscape, layered with thoughts and connections to people, the body, time, and place.
There will be a special tour of the Pilgrimages exhibition, @newlynexchange Social Fabric, and Malgorzata Mirga-tas @tatestives on Thursday 28th. See link in @_hweg_ bio for more info about booking.

An amazing morning gathering earth pigments with the fantastic @peteward.artist today, 2 years after we first went out walking! The land along the south-west coastal path, coloured by run off from the mining industry, is so rich and varied.
A fantastic start to a short residency at the new Porthmeor run studios in Newlyn ahead of my exhibition at @_hweg_ in November.
Fantastic to see these new works installed at the @britishartfair with the @barnsgraham. Lovely to exhibit alongside @andy_harper_artist and @jonathanmichaelray and the other artists the Trust has supported!
Thanks to everyone who's come along to the preview days. The fair continues until Sunday 29th at the Saatchi Gallery, London.

'Table runner (Sitting together, yet apart)' installed at @the_fayre this weekend.
Make yourself at home is a group show using the idea of the rooms and spaces of a house as a starting point to explore the works of 25 artists.
My piece, 'Table runner', weaves together old paintings, monoprints and remnant textiles. Taking the place of the Dining Room, 'Table runner' is about memory, landscape and longing in the domestic space, particularly how these thoughts manifest in the dining room over a shared meal.
The exhibition, co-curated by @julia.gros and @lywardian will continue at @_hweg_, Penzance 28th June - 3rd August 2024.

Delighted to have exhibited alongside a fantastic range of artists at @sennen_summer_fayre as the house, garden and an old vicarage were transformed into an intimate gallery and gathering space.
Thank you to @_hweg_ for selecting my work for this beautiful space, and to the lovely @pollybathsheba , @benwellerstudio and @harriet.baylis for inviting me into their home.
The two paintings on show are a continuation from the work I made in Newlyn last year. Using pigments made from stones gathered on the Cornish coast and on materials gathered both in Cornwall and from home, created a circle that connects times and places in Cornwall and Scotland.

Scottish Landscapes: A New Generation opens at @dovecotstudios on 1st July!
Really excited to share this exhibition I've been working on for a while, showcasing work from 10 recent graduates from Scottish art schools (2018-2022)
Each artist in the exhibition approaches the concept of Scottish landscape in a fresh way: looking past the traditional representational genre to tackle issues of sustainability, heritage, care, isolation, craftsmanship and colonialist history.
📆 1st July to 7th October 2023

After a month of installing a 6m wide painting at the Briggait and a 2m wide painting at 88 Dumbarton Road, it's lovely to make something so small.
Minack Detail (For G 🎂), SW Coastal Path earth pigments on mixed materials, 5x9cm, is a wee detail from the bigger 'Towards the Minack Theatre' painting I made a couple months ago.

The daily grind
Making paint from the land- Gunwalloe Gold, Geevor Red, Trevellas Green, Levant Purple. Mining residue and mineral build up have resulted in an amazing intensity of colour in the earth across South West Cornwall.
Thanks to @alban_roinard for documenting the pigment making process! And of course to @peteward.artist for introducing me to these amazing locations for collecting earth pigments (and for the @tatestives cups for mixing)

Toward Lizard Point, Earth Pigments on mixed materials.
My first painting using earth gathered along the south west coast of Cornwall.
For years I've been collecting colour palettes from the landscape, using photographs to pick out the colour of a fleck of mud or a sprinkle of heather. But these paints are made from the land, from piles of mud and stone.
I'm amazed by the range of colours I could get, and how they interact with the remnant materials. Still a lot to develop and explore!
Thanks again to the generous @peteward.artist for introducing me to the earth here!

I'm delighted to present Belongings, a piece by Martin Holman written in response to my show 'Pilgrimages' at Hweg gallery , Penzance 22nd November 2024 - 11th January 2025. I'm really touched by Martin's insights, references and analysis of the work and hope you enjoy reading the text. Read time is roughly 10 - 15 minutes. Thank you to Martin and to Joe at Hweg. For images of the show, see my works page here .

Delighted to have been asked by Lyon and Turnbull to select my Top Picks for the upcoming Art Edit 793 Auction. Aimed at making the art market more accessible, The Art Edit series of auctions enables people to begin or grow their art collection, with estimates starting at £200. Recent lots have included works by Victoria Crowe, Dame Ethel Walker and Dame Laura Knight, and here I'll be highlighting my top 3 picks for the next auction , opening on Wednesday 26th June 2024.

During my residency in Cornwall, awarded by Visual Arts Scotland , Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust and Porthmeor Studios, I met artist Peter Ward . After seeing an interesting painting of his at the Tremenheere Gallery, Penzance, I contacted Ward to ask about the medium of 'earth pigments'. To my delight he offered to show me the best pigment collecting sites along the South West Coastal Path.

Letting go of the imposter syndrome and accepting/celebrating the fact that I'm actually a curator. Nearly 3.5k people visited the Alan Davie exhibition at Dovecot Studios . That's mad to me. Thanks so much to everyone who visited, I hope you enjoyed it! A huge thank you to Dovecot for supporting my idea and giving me the opportunity to curate when I had no previous 'professional' experience. From approaching Dovecot with an exhibition plan in September 2019 to speaking at the exhibition opening in June 2022, I've learned a lot. Thanks also to Edinburgh Art Festival , the William Grant Foundation and the John Ellerman Foundation for the support.

Thank you to Edinburgh Art Festival for inviting me to speak at Art Late 2, streamed live from Jupiter Artland this week! It was a fantastic day of discussion, hearing from a range of artists, curators and creatives about their contributions to this years art festival. Watch the video below to hear my 8 reasons why everyone should visit the Alan Davie: Beginning of a Far-Off World exhibition at Dovecot Studios !

Meeting a lot of artists recently, who have such varied practices, has made me reflect on an essay I wrote back in 2018 on the role of artists in artist-run spaces. Particularly, meeting an artist who is currently studying Horticulture, got me thinking about the idea of 'artist-as-gardener'. I've just included a wee section of the essay here, which used EMBASSY Gallery in Edinburgh as a case-study, looking at the role of the artist in an artist-run space. In this section I was processing ideas of authorship and importance given to the 'Curator' title in contemporary discourse. Curatorial/artistic practice has developed significantly since I wrote this in 2018, but I think that the 'artist-as-gardener' idea is still a nice one.
